Schwebebahn Anniversary in Wuppertal: Major Community Festival Planned for Summer

For more than a century, the Wuppertal Suspension Railway has been an integral part of the city – as a landmark, a means of transportation, and a source of everyday memories for many people. To mark its anniversary, a special event will take place this summer: a large community festival for all residents of Wuppertal.

Community Festival Planned for the Summer

In the second half of the summer, the city plans to celebrate together. Preparations for the community festival are already in full swing. The goal is not only to honor the suspension railway as an engineering masterpiece, but also to highlight its place in the personal stories of countless people in Wuppertal.

A special feature of the festival will be the personal suspension railway stories of Wuppertal’s residents. Whether it’s daily commutes to work, childhood memories, or unique experiences above the river Wupper – these stories will help bring the anniversary celebrations to life.

More details about the festival program will be announced in the coming months.

Historic Design: The Suspension Railway in “GTW 72” Look

One of the anniversary highlights can already be seen across the city: a modern suspension railway car is running through Wuppertal in the orange-and-blue design of the legendary “GTW 72.”

This train combines nostalgic design with modern technology and pays tribute to the classic appearance of earlier suspension railway vehicles. Passengers can experience this special train throughout the year during regular service.

The Return of the Kaiserwagen

Another highlight of the anniversary year is the planned return of the historic Kaiserwagen. Intensive work is underway to bring the historic car back onto the track.

The Kaiserwagen is a particularly significant piece of suspension railway history: in 1900, Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife, Empress Auguste Viktoria, rode through the valley in this very carriage. Its return will allow residents and visitors alike to experience a part of this history once again.

Celebrating Wuppertal’s Landmark Together

With the planned community festival, special trains, and historical references, the suspension railway anniversary will connect the past, present, and future of Wuppertal.

Above all, the summer celebration aims to highlight one thing: the suspension railway belongs to Wuppertal – and to the people who travel with it every day.
