To mark the 125th anniversary of the Wuppertal Suspension Railway, Wuppertaler Stadtwerke (WSW) are hosting a special anniversary weekend on February 28 and March 1, 2026: On both days, rides on the suspension railway will be free of charge. In addition, a variety of small and large activities are planned along the route – so visitors are encouraged to keep their eyes open and join in the celebrations.
The date has been chosen deliberately: On March 1, 1901, the suspension railway officially began carrying passengers. Exactly 125 years later, this historic milestone is now being celebrated.
The anniversary year kicked off in January under the motto “2026 Is All About the Suspension Railway in Wuppertal.” One highlight is a suspension railway car in the orange-and-blue design of the historic GTW 72, which has since returned to regular service throughout the city. WSW are also inviting people to share their personal memories and stories about the suspension railway via an online submission form. These contributions will take center stage at a major community festival in late summer, open to all residents and visitors.
Please note: Free travel applies to the suspension railway only. Regular VRR fares remain in effect for buses and other modes of public transport.
