Commemorative Coin for the Suspension Railway

A tribute to the landmark

To mark the 125th anniversary of the Wuppertal Suspension Railway, the German federal government is planning to issue a €20 commemorative coin. This special coin, set to be released in early 2026, pays tribute to the historic and globally unique mode of transportation, which has become a symbol of the city of Wuppertal since its inception.

The coin will be minted in high-quality sterling silver, weighing 18 grams and measuring 32.5 millimeters in diameter. It will be available in two versions: a standard edition sold at face value and a collector’s edition of higher quality and price. Minting will take place in Berlin, and the edge of the coin will feature an inscription referencing the railway's route.

The obverse side of the coin depicts the current model of a suspension railway car as it departs from the main station. A special design element also recalls a peculiar moment in the railway’s history: the fall of an elephant named Tuffi during a promotional ride. The reverse side follows the traditional style of German commemorative coins, displaying a stylized eagle, standard national markings, and an indication of the silver content.

Detailed information regarding the availability and pricing of the collector’s edition will be announced ahead of the release.
