Wuppertal’s Suspension Railway is celebrating its 125th anniversary – and the whole city is invited to join the festivities! On Saturday, 19 September 2026, from 12 noon to 6 pm, Wuppertal Marketing (WMG) and Wuppertaler Stadtwerke (WSW) are hosting a big family festival on the square in front of Wuppertal Central Station.
A festival for the whole family
Under the motto “Let’s celebrate. Happy Birthday, Suspension Railway”, visitors of all ages can look forward to a varied programme. Hands-on activities, sports and games, music, fascinating insights from the fire brigade and police, as well as activities organised by various Wuppertal companies and institutions, will provide plenty of entertainment throughout the day.
One special highlight: Travel on the Suspension Railway will be free for everyone on the day of the event. And with a little luck, visitors can even win an exclusive ride aboard the historic Kaiserwagen.
125 stories from 125 years
The exhibition “125 Stories from 125 Years of the Suspension Railway” shows just how closely the iconic railway is connected to Wuppertal and its people. Personal memories and anecdotes shared by Wuppertal residents tell of special moments and demonstrate why the Suspension Railway is much more than just a means of transport.
